In Your Face- Joh-joh Walsh

In Your Face- Joh-joh Walsh

1. To make this artwork I started with using a computer program (picasso head) to set the layout of my artwork. I then made a pencil sketch in my VA diary and transferred that onto A3 paper. I used pastels to colour it in and made checkers on the back ground. I then outlined all the main features and drew patterns with opposite colours on the block colours.

Write and blog a review of your work explaining the task you have completed and where your photographs explore - tone, shape, space, form and texture-

In my photographs I have tried to emphasise the shadow and different shades of colours by adjusting the saturation and contrast along with brightness. I have made the objects look smooth and defined the edges and separate shapes. In Brick Wall you can see the different depth of colours and shades and the shadows cast over them. You can also see the different shapes and texture in the wall. In Under Side of Bridge you can see that the sides and shape of the bridge is defined against the sky. This is very different from the Brick Wall in which it was quite 2 dimensional whereas this photograph has depth.

Using your photographs as examples explain how you think artworks can reflect aspects of the world. (Artwork/World)-

Artworks reflect on aspects of the world by making them relate to the subject or building. The Brick Wall defines the structure and building as sturdy and strong like the school and in Roof, shade sail and wall you can see the different tones and textures of the different structures. This reflects that all parts of the building have different purposes and uses and they are all designed differently. Architecture is a big part in our community and it shows the human progress in building and the way it has changed and evolved over time. Comparing Brick Wall to Tin Wall, the brick looks tired and old whereas the tin looks shiny and new but the brick looks more sturdy where the tin might fall down. Buildings are designed to be showcased to the world.

Constantin Brâncuși

Constantin Brâncusi was a Romania-born sculptor who made his career in France. He is considered the pioneer of modernism and is called the Patriarch of Modern Sculpture. He led the way for many other artists when modernism wasn't very acceptable or popular. His artworks had an abstract style that emphasised clean geometrical lines. He used the technique of direct carving in his sculptures and used raw materials to construct his artworks. Two of Constantin Brâncusi's most significant artworks were Bird in Space and Sleeping Muse. Both of these artworks are of animate objects but have a very abstract style.

Favourite Ian Swift Artwork

My favourite Ian Swift artwork is 'Extreme Surfing' which was exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, 2011. It is a fairly large sculpture (taller than an average person) of an elephant performing a handstand, it is constructed from colourful scraps of metal which have white words written on them. Swift constructed this artwork with the hope that it would inspire people with its bright and fun atmosphere. Many critics have described it as 'a fun piece by Ian Swift' and it was a very popular sculpture at the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. The mix of colour enhanced the beautiful Bondi background and the fitting name (Extreme Surfing) made this sculpture perfect for the exhibition.
